[1][bodh] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied; and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these five powers.

What five?

The power of faith,
the power of energy,
the power of mindfulness,
the power of concentration
and the power of insight.

Monks, these are the five powers.

And where, monks, is the power of faith to be seen?

In the four factors[1] of Streamwinning.

There is the power of faith to be seen.

And where, monks, is the power of energy to be seen?

In the four right efforts.[2]

There is the power of energy to be seen.

And where, monks, is the power of mindfulness to be seen?

In the four uprisings of mindfulness.[3]

There is the power of mindfulness to be seen.

And where, monks, is the power of concentration to be seen?

In the four musings.[4]

There is the power of concentration to be seen.

[9] And where, monks, is the power of insight to be seen?

In the four Ariyan truths.[5]

There the power of insight is to be seen.

These, monks, are the five powers.'
