The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove,
in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park:
And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:
"Brethren!"
"Master!" responded those brethren.
The Exalted One said:
"Any recluses and brahmins, brethren,
who do not know decay-and-death,
do not know the uprising of decay-and-death,
do not know the ceasing of decay-and-death,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of decay-and-death;
who do not know birth,
do not know the uprising of birth,
do not know the ceasing of birth,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of birth;
who do not know becoming,
do not know the uprising of becoming,
do not know the ceasing of becoming,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of becoming;
who do not know grasping,
do not know the uprising of grasping,
do not know the ceasing of grasping,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of grasping;
who do not know craving,
do not know the uprising of craving,
do not know the ceasing of craving,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of craving;
who do not know feeling,
do not know the uprising of feeling,
do not know the ceasing of feeling,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of feeling;
who do not know contact,
do not know the uprising of contact,
do not know the ceasing of contact,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of contact;
who do not know sense,
do not know the uprising of sense,
do not know the ceasing of sense,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of sense;
who do not know name-and-shape,
do not know the uprising of name-and-shape,
do not know the ceasing of name-and-shape,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of name-and-shape;
who do not know consciousness,
do not know the uprising of consciousness,
do not know the ceasing of consciousness,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of consciousness;
who do not know activities,
do not know the uprising of activities,
do not know the ceasing of activities,
do not know the way leading to the ceasing of activities;
those recluses or those brahmins are approved
neither among recluses as recluses,
nor among brahmins as brahmins,
nor have those venerable ones
even in this present life
understood of themselves,
nor realized
what is the good
of being either recluse or brahmin,
nor lived in the attainment thereof."

do know the way leading to the ceasing of name-and-shape;
who do know consciousness,

do know the way leading to the ceasing of consciousness;
