[15] [8]

[1][than][olds][bodh]Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Savatthi, at Jeta Grove, in Anathapindika's, Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"I will show you a teaching, Brethren,
for the abandoning the all.

Do ye listen to it.

And what, Brethren, is the teaching
for the abandoning of the all?

The eye, Brethren, must be abandoned,
objects must be abandoned,
eye-consciousness must be abandoned
eye-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to eye-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

The ear, Brethren, must be abandoned,
sounds must be abandoned,
ear-consciousness must be abandoned
ear-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to ear-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

The nose, Brethren, must be abandoned,
scents must be abandoned,
nose-consciousness must be abandoned
nose-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to nose-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

The tongue, Brethren, must be abandoned,
savours must be abandoned,
tongue-consciousness must be abandoned
tongue-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to tongue-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

The body, Brethren, must be abandoned,
things tactile must be abandoned,
body-consciousness must be abandoned
body-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to body-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

The mind, Brethren, must be abandoned,
mind-states must be abandoned,
mind-consciousness must be abandoned
mind-contact must be abandoned.

That weal
or woe
or neutral state experienced
which arises owing to mind-contact, -
that also must be abandoned.

This, Brethren, is the teaching for the abandoning of the all.[1]
