[1] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One once staying near Savatthi.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spake:

"I will teach you, Brethren,
the arising and the destruction of ill.

Do ye listen to it.

And what, Brethren, is the arising of ill?

Owing to eye and objects
arises eye-consciousness.

The [53] coming together of the three is contact.[1]

Conditioned by contact is feeling.

Conditioned by feeling is craving.

This is the arising of ill.[2]

Owing to ear and sounds
