[1]Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was staying near Rajagaha in Jivaka's Mango Grove.

Then the venerable Kotthika the Great came to see the Exalted One
on coming to him greeted him courteously,
and after the exchange of greetings and compliments
sat down at one side.

Seated at one side he said to the Exalted One:

"Well for me, lord, if the Exalted One would teach me the Norm in brief,
hearing which teaching from the Exalted One
I might dwell solitary,
remote,
earnest,
ardent
and aspiring."

"What is without the self, Kotthika, -
you should put away desire for that.

And what is without the self?

The eye, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.

Objects, Kotthika, are without the self.

You should put away desire for them.

Eye-consciousness, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.

Eye-contact, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.

The weal or woe or neutral state experienced
that arises owing to eye-contact, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.

The ear, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.

Sounds, Kotthika, are without the self.

You should put away desire for them.

Ear-consciousness, Kotthika, is without the self.

You should put away desire for that.
