Sutta 5

Sikkhā Suttaṃ

Precepts

Translated from the Pali
by Sister Upalavanna

[5][pts][bd] Bhikkhus whoever bhikkhu or bhikkhuni was to give up the holy life||
and return to sensual pleasures||
would here and now||
be blamed in five ways.|| ||

What five?|| ||

Lacking in faith,||
shame,||
remorse,||
effort and||
wisdom in meritorious things.

Bhikkhus whoever bhikkhu or bhikkhuni was to lead the holy life||
complete and pure||
with unpleasantness and displeasure||
with tearful eyes||
would be here and now||
rightfully praised in five ways.

What five?|| ||

For the presence of faith,||
shame,||
remorse,||
effort and||
wisdom in meritorious things.
