Ekaɱ samayaɱ Bhagavā videhesu cārikaɱ carati mahatā bhikkhu-saŋghena saddhiɱ pañca-mattehi bhikkhūsatehi. Tena kho pana samayena brāhmāyu nāma brāhmaṇo mithilāyaɱ paṭivasati jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto vīsaɱvassasatiko jātiyā, tiṇṇaɱ vedānaɱ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaɱ sākkharappabhedānaɱ itihāsapañcamānaɱ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Assosi kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo: " samaṇo khalu bho Gotamo Sakyaputto Sakyakulā pabbajito videhesu cārikaɱ carati mahatā bhikkhu-saŋghena saddhiɱ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi. Taɱ kho pana Bhagavantaɱ Gotamaɱ evaɱ kalyāṇo kittisaddo.|| ||

Abbhūggato 'Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaɱ Sammā-sambuddho vijjācaraṇa sampanno sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā deva-manussānaɱ buddho Bhagavā. So imaɱ lokaɱ sadevakaɱ samārakaɱ sabrahmakaɱ sassamaṇa-brāhmaṇiɱ pajaɱ sadeva-manussaɱ sayaɱ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaɱ deseti ādi kalyāṇaɱ majjhe kalyāṇaɱ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaɱ sātthaɱ savyañjanaɱ kevalaparipuṇṇaɱ parisuddhaɱ brahmacariyaɱ pakāseti. Sādhu kho pana tathārūpānaɱ arahataɱ dassanaɱ ho' ti.ti. [134]

Tena kho pana samayena Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa uttaro nāma māṇavo antevāsī hoti tiṇṇaɱ vedānaɱ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaɱ sākkharappabhedānaɱ itihāsapañcamānaɱ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uttaraɱ māṇavaɱ āmantesi: 'ayaɱ tāta uttara, Samaṇo Gotamo Sakyaputto Sakyakulā pabbajito videhesu cārikaɱ carati mahatā bhikkhūsaŋghena saddhiɱ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi. Taɱ kho pana Bhagavantaɱ Gotamaɱ evaɱ kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhūggato'Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaɱ Sammā-sambuddho vijjācaraṇa sampanno sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā deva-manussānaɱ buddho Bhagavā.So imaɱ lokaɱ sadevakaɱ samārakaɱ sabrahmakaɱ sassamaṇa-brāhmaṇiɱ pajaɱ sadeva-manussaɱ sayaɱ abhiññā ññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. Ehi tvaɱ tāta uttara, yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten'upasaŋkama. Upasaŋkamitvā samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ jānāhi yadi vā taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ tathā santaɱ yeva saddo abbhuggato. Yadi vā no tathā, yadi vā so bhavaɱ Gotamo tādiso, yadi vā na tādiso, tayā mayaɱ taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ vedissāmā' ti. Yathā kathampanāhaɱ bho taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ jānissāmi: yadi vā taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ tathā santaɱ yeva saddo abbhuggato, yadi vā no tathā, yadi vā so bhavaɱ Gotamo tādiso yadivā natādiso' ti.|| ||

Āgatāni kho tāta uttara, amhākaɱ mantesu dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni, yehi samannāgatassa mahāpurisassa dveyeva gatiyo bhavanti anaññā, sace agāraɱ ajjhāvasati, rājā hoti cakkavattī dhammiko dhammarājā cāturanto vijitāvī janapadatthāvariyappatto sattaratanasamannāgato. Tassimāni sattaratanāni bhavanti, seyyathīdaɱ: cakkaratanaɱ hatthiratanaɱ assaratanaɱ maṇiratanaɱ itthiratanaɱ gahapatiratanaɱ parināyakaratanameva sattamaɱ. Parosahassaɱ kho panassa puttā bhavanti sūrā vīraŋgarūpā parasenappamaddanā. So imaɱ paṭhaviɱ sāgarapariyan taɱ adaṇḍena asatthena dhammena abhivijiya ajjhāvasati: sace kho pana agārasmā anagāriyaɱ pabbajati, arahaɱ hoti Sammā-sambuddho loke vivattacchado1. Ahaɱ kho pana te tāta uttara,mantānaɱ dātā, tvaɱ me mantānaɱ paṭiggahetāti.|| ||

Evaɱ hoti kho uttaro māṇavo Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa paṭissutvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaɱ katvā videhesu yena Bhagavā tena [135] cārikaɱ pakkāmi. Anupubbena cārikaɱ caramāno yena Bhagavā ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiɱ sammodi, sammodanīyaɱ kathaɱ sārāṇīyaɱ vītisāretvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdi. Eka-m-antaɱ nisinno kho uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kāye dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni sammannesi. Addasā kho uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kāye dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve. Dvīsu mahāpurisalakkhaṇesu kaŋkhati vicikicchati nādhimuccati na sampasīdati: ' kosohite ca vatthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya cā' ti. Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi: 'passati kho me ayaɱ uttaro māṇavo dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve. Dvīsu mahāpurisalakkhaṇesu kaŋkhati vicikicchati nādhimuccati na sampasidati kosohite ca c'atthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya cā' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagava tathārūpaɱ iddhābhisankhāraɱ abhisaŋkhāsi2. Yathā addasa uttaro māṇavo Bhagavato kosohitaɱ vatthaguyhaɱ. Atha kho Bhagavā jivhaɱ ninnāmetvā ubhopi kaṇṇasotāni anumasi parimasi3. Ubhopi nāsikāsotāni anumasi parimasi. Kevalampi4 lalāṭamaṇḍalaɱ jivhāya chādesi.|| ||

Atha kho uttarassa māṇavassa etad ahosi: samannāgato kho Samaṇo Gotamodvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇehi. Yan'nūnāhaɱ samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ anubandheyyaɱ iriyāpathañc'assa passeyya'nti. Atha kho uttaro māṇavo satta māsāni Bhagavantaɱ anubandhi jāyāva anapāyinī atha kho uttaro māṇavo sattannaɱ māsānaɱ accayena videhesu yena mithilā tena cārikaɱ pakkāmi. Anupubbena cārikaɱ caramāno yena mithilā yena Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdi. Eka-m-antaɱ nisinnaɱ kho uttaraɱ māṇavaɱ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo etad avoca: kacci tāta uttara, taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ tathā santaɱ yeva saddo [136] abbhuggato no aññatā, kacci ca pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo tādiso, no aññādiso' ti.|| ||

Tathāsantaɱyeva bho taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ tathā saddo abbhuggato, no aññathā, tādiso ca bho so bhavaɱ Gotamo, na aññādiso. Samannāgato ca so bho bhavaɱ Gotamo dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇehi.|| ||

Suppatiṭṭhitapādo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo, idampi tassa1 bhoto Gotamassa mahāpurisassa mahāpurisa-lakkhaṇaɱ bhavati.|| ||

Heṭṭhā kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa pādatalesu cakkāni jātāni sahassārāni sanemikāni sanābhikāni sabbākāraparipūrāṇi.|| ||

Āyatapaṇhī kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||
Dīghaŋgulī kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||
Mudutaeṇahatthapādo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||
Jālahatthapādo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||
Ussaŋkhapādo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||
Eṇijaŋgho kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo||

Sukhumacchavi kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo sukhumattā chaviyā rajojallaɱ kāye na upalippati.|| ||

Ekekalomo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo,ekekāni lomāni lomakūpesu jātāni.|| ||

Uddhaggalomo kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo uddhaggāni lomāni jātāni nīlāni añjanavaṇṇāni kuṇḍalāvattāni padakkhiṇāvattakajātāni.|| ||

Uṇhīsasīso kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo idampi tassa bhoto Gotamassa mahāpurisassa mahāpurisa-lakkhaṇaɱ bhavati. Imehi kho so bhavaɱ Gotamo dvatiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇehi samannāgato.|| ||

Gacchanto kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo dakkhiṇen'eva pādena paṭhamaɱ pakkamati, so nātidūre pādaɱ uddharati, nāccāsanne pādaɱ nikkhipati, so nātisīghaɱ gacchati, nātisanikaɱ gacchati, na ca adduvena addūvaɱ saŋghaṭṭento gacchati, na ca gopphakena gopphakaɱ gaŋghaṭṭento gacchati, so gacchanto na satthiɱ unnāmeti, na satthiɱ onāmeti, na sattiɱ sannāmeti, na sattiɱ vināmeti. Gacchato kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa adharakāyova1 iñjati. Na ca kāyabalena gacchati. Avalokento kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo sabbakāyen'eva avaloketi. So na uddhaɱ ulloketi. Na adho oloketi. Na ca vipekkhamāno gacchati. Yugamattañ ca pekkhati. Tato c'assa uttariɱ anāvaṭaɱ ñāṇa-dassanaɱ bhavati.|| ||

So antaragharaɱ pavisanto na kāyaɱ unnāmeti. Na kāyaɱ onāmeti. Na kāyaɱ sannāmeti. [138] na kāyaɱ vināmeti. So nātidūre nāccāsanne āsanassa parivattati. Na ca pāṇinā ālambhitvā āsane nisīdati. Na ca āsanasmiɱ kāyaɱ pakkhipati. So antaraghare nisinno samāno na hatthakukkuccaɱ āpajjati. Na pādakukkuccaɱ āpajjati. Na ca adduvena adduvaɱ2 āropetvā nisīdati. Na ca gopphakena gopphakaɱ āropetvā nisīdati. Na ca pāṇinā hanukaɱ upādiyitvā3 nisīdati. So antaraghare nisinnova samāno nacchambhati na kampati na vedhati na paritassati. Acchamahī akampī avedhī aparitassī vigatalomahaɱso. Vivekāvatto ca4 so bhavaɱ Gotamo antaraghare nisinno hoti.|| ||

So pattodakaɱ patigaṇhanto na pattaɱ unnāmeti. Na pattaɱ onāmeti. Na pattaɱ sannāmeti. Na pattaɱ vināmeti. So pattodakaɱ patigaṇhāti nātithokaɱ nātibahuɱ. So na bulubulukārakaɱ1 pattaɱ dhovati. Na samparivattakaɱ pattaɱ dhovati. Na pattaɱ bhumiyaɱ nikkhipitvā hatthe dhovati. Hatthesu dhotesu patto dhoto hoti. Patte dhote hatthā dhotā honti. So pattodakaɱ chaḍḍheti nātidūre nāccāsanne na ca vicchaḍḍayamāno.|| ||

So odanaɱ patigaṇhanto2 na pattaɱ unnāmeti. Na pattaɱ onāmeti. Na pattaɱ sannāmeti na pattaɱ vināmeti. So odanaɱ patigaṇhāti nātithokaɱ nātibahuɱ. Byañjanaɱ kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo byañjanamattāya āhāreti, na ca byañjanena ālopaɱ atimāneti3. Dvattikkhattuɱ kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo mukhe ālopaɱ samparivattetvā ajjhoharati. Na c'assa kāci odanamiñjā asambhinnaɱ kāyaɱ pavisati, na c'assa kāci odanamiñjā mukhe avasiṭṭhā hoti. Athāparaɱ ālopaɱ upanāmeti. Rasapaṭisaŋvedi kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo āhāraɱ āhāreti no ca rasarāgapaṭisaŋvedī. Aṭṭhaŋgasamannāgataɱ kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo āhāraɱ āhāreti. N'eva davāya na madāya na maṇḍanāya na vibhūsanāya yāvad eva imassa kāyassa ṭhitiyā yāpanāya vihiɱsūparatiyā brahmacariyānuggahāya iti purāṇañ ca [139] vedanaɱ paṭihaŋkhāmi. Navañca vedanaɱ na uppādessāmi. Yātrā ca me bhavissati anavajjatā ca phāsuvihāro cā' ti.|| ||

So bhuttāvī pattodakaɱ patigaṇhanto na pattaɱ unnāmeti na pattaɱ onāmeti. Na pattaɱ sannāmeti. Na pattaɱ vināmeti. So pattodakaɱ patigaṇhāti nātithokaɱ nātibahuɱ. So na bulubulukārakaɱ1 pattaɱ dhovati na samparivattakaɱ pattaɱ dhovati. Na pattaɱ bhumiyaɱ nikkhipitvā hatthe dhovati. Hatthesu dhotesu patto dhoto hoti. Patte dhote hatthā dhotā honti. So pattodakaɱ chaḍḍeti nātidūre nāccāsanne, na ca vicchaḍḍayamāno. So bhuttāvī na pattaɱ4 bhumiyaɱ nikkhipati nātidure nāccāsanne. Na ca an'atthiko pattena hoti, na ca ativelānurakkhī pattasmiɱ.|| ||

So bhuttāvī muhuttaɱ tuṇhī nisidati. Na ca anumodanassa kālamatināmeti. So bhuttāvī anumodati. Na taɱ bhattaɱ garahati. Na aññaɱ bhattaɱ pāṭikaŋkhati5 aññadatthu dhammiyāva kathāya taɱ parisaɱ sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti samp'ahaɱseti. So taɱ parisaɱ dhammiyā kathāya sandassetvā samādapetvā samuttejetvā samp'ahaɱsetvā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkamati.|| ||

So nātisīghaɱ gacchati. Nātisanikaɱ gacchati. Na ca nimuccitukāmo gacchati na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāye cīvaraɱ accUkkaṭṭhaɱ hoti, na ca accokkaṭṭhaɱ, na ca kāyasmiɱ allīnaɱ, na ca kāyasmā apakaṭṭhaɱ, na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāyamhā vāto cīvaraɱ apavahati. Na ca tassa bhoto Gotamassa kāye rajojallaɱ upalippati3|| ||

So ārāmagato nisīdati paññatte āsane. Nisajja pāde pakkhāleti. Na ca so bhavaɱ Gotamo pādamaṇḍanānuyogamanuyutto viharati. So pāde pakkhāletvā nisīdati pallŋkaɱ ābhujitvā ujuɱ kāyaɱ paṇidhāya parimukhaɱ satiɱ upaṭṭhapetvā. So n'eva attavyābādhāya ceteti na paravyābādhāya ceteti. Na ubhayavyābādhāya ceteti. Attahitaɱ parahitaɱ ubhayahitaɱ sabbalokahitameva [140] so bhavaɱ Gotamo cintento nisinno hoti.|| ||

So ārāmagato parisatiɱ dhammaɱ deseti na taɱ parisaɱ ussādeti. Na taɱ parisaɱ apasādeti. Aññadatthu dhammiyāva kathāya taɱ parisaɱ sandasseti samādapeti samuttejeti samp'ahaɱseti. Aṭṭhaŋgasamannāgato kho panassa bhoto Gotamassa mukhato ghosoniccharati. Vissaṭṭhoca viññeyyo ca mañchu ca savanīyo ca bindu ca avisārī ca gambhīro ca ninnādi ca. Yathāparisaɱ kho pana so bhavaɱ Gotamo sarena viññāpeti. Na c'assa bahiddhā parisāya ghoso niccharati. Te tena bhotā Gotamena dhammiyā kathāya sandassitā samādapitā samuttejitā samp'ahaɱsitā uṭṭhāy āsanā pakkamanti apalokayamānāyeva avijahantā bhāvena4. Addasāma kho mayaɱ bho taɱ bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ gacchantaɱ. Addasāma ṭhitaɱ. Addasāma antaragharaɱ pavisantaɱ5 addasāma antaraghare nisinnaɱ tuṇhībhūtaɱ. Addasāma bhuttāviɱ anumodantaɱ. Addasāma ārāmaɱ gacchantaɱ6 addasāma āramagataɱ nisinnaɱ tuṇhībhūtaɱ. Addasāma āramagataɱ parisatiɱ dhammaɱ desentaɱ. Ediso ca ediso ca bho so bhavaɱ Gotamo, tato ca bhiyyo' ti.|| ||

Evaɱ vutte Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāy āsanā ekaɱsaɱ uttarāsaŋgaɱ karitvā yena Bhagavā ten'añjaliɱ panāmetvā tikkhattuɱ udānaɱ udānesi:||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā-sambuddhassa,||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā-sambuddhassa,||
namo tassa Bhagavato arahato Sammā-sambuddhassa.|| ||

Appeva nāma mayaɱ kadāci karahaci tena bhotā Gotamena saddhiɱ samāgaccheyyāma,||
app'eva nāma siyā kocid-eva kathāsallāpo' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā videhesu anupubbena cārikaɱ caramāno yena mithilā tadavasari. Tatra sudaɱ Bhagavā mithilāyaɱ viharati makhādevAmbavane assosuɱ kho methileyyakā1 brāhmaṇagahapatikā samaṇo khalu bho [141] Gotamo Sakyaputto Sakyakulā pabbajito videhesu cārikaɱ caramāno mahatā bhikkhū saŋghena saddhiɱ pañca-mattehi bhikkhu-satehi mithilāanuppatto mithilāyaɱ viharati makhādevAmbavane. Taɱ kho pana Bhagavantaɱ Gotamaɱ evaɱ kalyāṇo kittisaddo abbhuggato: 'Iti pi so Bhagavā arahaɱ Sammā-sambuddho vijjā-caraṇa-sampanno sugato loka-vidū anuttaro purisadammasārathi satthā deva-manussānaɱ buddho Bhagavā, so imaɱ lokaɱ sadevakaɱ samārakaɱ sabrahmakaɱ sassamaṇa-brāhmaṇiɱ pajaɱ sadeva-manussaɱ sayaɱ abhiññā sacchikatvā pavedeti. So dhammaɱ deseti ādi kalyāṇaɱ majjhe kalyāṇaɱ pariyosāna-kalyāṇaɱ sātthaɱ savyañjanaɱ kevalaparipuṇṇaɱ parisuddhaɱ brahmacariyaɱ pakāseti. Sādhu kho pana tathārūpānaɱ arahataɱ dassanaɱ ho' ti.ti. Atha kho methileyyakā1 app'ekacce Bhagavantaɱ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdiɱsu, app'ekacce Bhagavatā saddhiɱ sammodiɱsu, sammodanīyaɱ kathaɱ sārāṇīyaɱ2 vītisāretvā eka-m-antaɱ nisidiɱsu. App'ekacce yena Bhagavā ten'añjaliɱ paṇāmetvā eka-m-antaɱ nisidiɱsu, app'ekacce Bhagavato santike nāmagottaɱ sāvetvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdiɱsu. App'ekacce tuṇhībhūtā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdiɱsu.|| ||

Assosi kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo,'samaṇo khalu bho Gotamo Sakyaputto Sakyakulā pabbajito mithilaɱ anuppatto, mithilāyaɱ viharati makhādevAmbavane' ti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo sambahulehi māṇavakehi saddhiɱ yena makhādevambavanaɱ ten'upasaŋkami, atha kho Brahmāyuno brāhmaṇassa avidūre ambavanassa etad ahosi: 'na kho me taɱ paṭirūpaɱ yohaɱ pubbe appaṭisaɱvidito samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ dassanāya upasaŋkameyya'nti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo aññataraɱ māṇavakaɱ āmantesi: 'ehi tvaɱ māṇavaka, yena Samaṇo Gotamo ten'upasaŋkama, upasaŋkamitvā mama vacanena samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ appābādhaɱ appātaŋkaɱ lahuṭṭhānaɱ balaɱ phāsuvihāraɱ puccha, Brahmāyu bho Gotama brāhmaṇo bhavantaɱ Gotamaɱ appābādhaɱ appātaŋkaɱ lahuṭṭhānaɱ balaɱ phāsuvihāraɱ pucchatī' ti. Evaɱ ca vadehi,Brahmāyu bho Gotama,brāhmaṇo jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto vīsaɱvassasatiko jātiyā tiṇṇaɱ vedānaɱ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaɱ sākkharappabhedānaɱ itihāsapañcamānaɱ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. Yāvatā kho brāhmaṇagahapatikā mithilāyaɱ paṭivasanti Brahmāyu tesaɱ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaɱ bhogehi. Bravmāyu tesaɱ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaɱ mantehi. [142] Brahmāyu tesaɱ brāhmaṇo aggam akkhāyati yad idaɱ āyunā c'eva yasasā ca. So bhoto Gotamassa dassanakāmo' ti.|| ||

Evaɱ bhoti kho so māṇavako Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa paṭissutvā yena Bhagavā ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiɱ sammodi, sammodanīyaɱ kathaɱ sārāṇīyaɱ vītisāretvā eka-m-antaɱ aṭṭhāsi. Eka-m-antaɱ ṭhito kho so māṇavako Bhagavantaɱ etad avoca: Brahmāyu bho Gotama, brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaɱ Gotamaɱ appābādhaɱ appātaŋkaɱ la lahuṭṭhānaɱ balaɱ phāsuvihāraɱ pucchati. Brahmāyu bho Gotama, brāhmaṇo jiṇṇo vuddho mahallako addhagato vayo anuppatto vīsaɱvassasatiko jātiyā tiṇṇaɱ vedānaɱ pāragu sanighaṇḍukeṭubhānaɱ sākkharappabhedānaɱ itihāsapañcamānaɱ padako veyyākaraṇo lokāyatamahāpurisalakkhaṇesu anavayo. 'Yassadāni māṇavaka, Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo kālaɱ maññatī' ti.|| ||

Atha kho so māṇavako yena Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ etad avoca: 'katāvakāso kho bhavaɱ samaṇena Gotamena, yassadāni bhavaɱ kālaɱ maññatī' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten'upasaŋkami. Addasā kho sā parisā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ dūrato va āgacchantaɱ, disvāna atha naɱ1 okāsamakāsi yathā taɱ ñātassa yasassino. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo taɱ parisaɱ etad avoca: alaɱ bho, nisīdatha tumhe sake āsane, idhāhaɱ samaṇassa Gotamassa santike nisīdissāmīti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo yena Bhagavā ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā Bhagavatā saddhiɱ sammodi. Sammodanīyaɱ kathaɱ sārāṇīyaɱ vītisāretvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdi. Eka-m-antaɱ nisinno kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato [143] kāye dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni sammannesi. Addasā kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato kāye dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni, yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve dvīsu mahāpurisalakkhaṇesu kaŋkhati vicikicchati nādhimuccati na sampasīdati. Kosohite ca vatthaguyhe pahūtajivhatāya ca. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaɱ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi:|| ||

'Ye me dvattiɱsāti sutā mahāpurisalakkhaṇā,|| ||

Duve tesaɱ na passāmi bhoto kāyasmiɱ Gotama.|| ||

Kacci kosohitaɱ bhoto vatthaguyhaɱ naruttama,|| ||

Nārīsahanāma savhayā kacci jivhā na rassikā3|| ||

Kacci pahutajivhosi? Yathā taɱ jāniyāmase,|| ||

Ninnāmayetaɱ tanukaɱ kaŋkhaɱ vinaya no ise,|| ||

Diṭṭhadhammahitatthāya samparāya sukhāya ca,|| ||

Katāvakāsā pucchemu4 yaɱ kiñci abhipatthitan' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavato etad ahosi: 'passati kho me ayaɱ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo dvattiɱsa mahāpurisalakkhaṇāni yebhūyyena ṭhapetvā dve dvīsu mahāpurisalakkhaṇesu kaŋkhati vicikicchati nādimuccati na sampasīdati kosohite ca c'atthaguyha pahūtajivhatāya cāti. Atha kho Bhagavā tathārūpaɱ iddhābhisankhāraɱ abhisaŋkhāsi. Yathā addasa Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato kosohitaɱ c'atthaguyhaɱ. Atha kho Bhagavā jivhaɱ ninnāmetvā ubhopi kaṇṇasotāni anumasi parimasi1, ubhopi nāsikāsotāni anumasi parimasi. Kevalampi lalāṭamaṇḍalaɱ jivhāya chādesi atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ gāthāhi paccabhāsi.|| ||

Ye te dvattiɱsāti sutā mahāpurisalakkhaṇā,|| ||

Sabbe te mama kāyasmiɱ mā te kaŋkhāhu brāhmaṇa.|| ||

Abhiññeyyaɱ abhiññātaɱ bhāvetabbañca bhāvitaɱ,|| ||

Pahātabbaɱ pahīnaɱ me tasmā buddhosmi brāhmaṇa. [144]|| ||

Diṭṭhadhammahitatthāya samparāya sukhāya ca,|| ||

Katāvakāso pucchassu yaɱ kiñci abhipatthitanti.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa etad ahosi: 'katāvakāso kho'mhi samaṇena Gotamena. Kin nu kho ahaɱ samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ puccheyyaɱ diṭṭhadhammikaɱ vā atthaɱ samparāyikaɱ vāti. Atha kho Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa etad ahosi: 'kusalo kho ahaɱ diṭṭhadhammikānaɱ atthānaɱ, aññe pi maɱ diṭṭhadhammikaɱ atthaɱ pucchanti. Yan'nūnāhaɱ samaṇaɱ Gotamaɱ samparāyikaɱ yeva atthaɱ puccheyya'nti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavantaɱ gāthāhi ajjhabhāsi.|| ||

'Kathaɱ bho brāhmaṇo hoti kathaɱ bhavati vedagu,||
Tevijjo bho kathaɱ hoti sottiyo kintivuccati.|| ||

Arahaɱ bho kathaɱ hoti kathaɱ bhavati kevalī,||
Municca bho kathaɱ hoti buddho kinti pavuccatī' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ gāthāhi paccabhāsi.|| ||

'Pubbenivāsaɱ yo vedi saggāpāyañ ca passati,||
Atho jātikkhayaɱ patto abhiññā vosito muni.|| ||

Cittaɱ visuddhaɱ jānāti muttaɱ rāgehi sabbaso,||
Pahīna jātimaraṇo brahmacariyassa kevalī|| ||

Pāragu sabbadhammānaɱ buddho tādi pavucca' ti.ti.|| ||

Evaɱ vutte Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhāy āsanā ekaɱsaɱ uttarāsaŋgaɱ karitvā Bhagavato pādesu sirasā nipatitvā Bhagavato pādāni mukhena ca paricumbati. Pāṇīhi ca parisambāhati. Nāmañca sāveti: Brahmāyu cāhaɱ1 bho Gotama brāhmaṇo, Brahmāyu cāhaɱ1 bho Gotama brāhmaṇo' ti. Atha kho sā parisā acchariyabbhūtacittā jātā ahosi: 'acchariyaɱ vata bho, abbhūtaɱ vata bho, samaṇassa mahiddhikatā mahānubhāvatā2. Yatrahi nāmo ayaɱ Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo ñāto yassasī evarūpaɱ paramanipaccakāraɱ3 karissatī' ti.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ etad avoca: [PTS Page 145 ']alaɱ brāhmaṇa, uṭṭhaha, nisīda tvaɱ sake āsane, yato te mayi cittaɱ pasanna'nti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo uṭṭhabhitvā sake āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Atha kho Bhagavā Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa ānupubbīkathaɱ kathesi. Seyyathīdaɱ: 'dānakathaɱ sīlakathaɱ saggakathaɱ kāmānaɱ ādīnavaɱ okāraɱ saŋkilesaɱ nekkhamme ānisaɱsaɱ pakāsesi yadā Bhagavā aññāsi Brahmāyuɱ brāhmaṇaɱ kallacittaɱ muducittaɱ vinīvaraṇacittaɱ udaggacittaɱ pasannacittaɱ, atha yā buddhānaɱ sāmukkaɱsikā dhammadesanā taɱ pakāsesi dukkhaɱ samudayaɱ nirodhaɱ maggaɱ. Seyyathā pi nāma suddhaɱ vatthaɱ apagatakāḷakaɱ samma-d-eva rajanaɱ patigaṇheyya, evam evaɱ Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa tasmiññeva āsane virajaɱ vītamalaɱ dhammacakkhuɱ udapādi, yaɱ kiñci samudayadhammaɱ sabbaɱ taɱ nirodhadhammanti. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo diṭṭhadhammo, pattadhammo, viditadhammo, pariyogāḷhadhammo tiṇṇavicikiccho vigatakathaŋkatho vesārajjappatto aparappaccayo satthusāsane Bhagavantaɱ etad avoca: " abhikkantaɱ ho Gotama, abhikkantaɱ bho Gotama. Seyyathā pi bho Gotama nikkujjitaɱ vā ukkujjeyya. Paṭicchannaɱ vā vivareyya, mūḷhassa vā maggaɱ ācikkheyya, andhakāre vā telapajjotaɱ dhāreyya 'cakkhūmanto rūpāni dakkhin' ti.ti. Evam evaɱ bhotā Gotamena aneka-pariyāyena dhammo pakāsito esāhaɱ Bhagavantaɱ Gotamaɱ saraṇaɱ gacchāmi dhammañca bhikkhu-saŋghañ ca, upāsakaɱ maɱ bhavaɱ Gotamamo dhāretu ajjatagge pāṇupetaɱ saraṇaŋgataɱ. Adivāsetu ca me bhavaɱ Gotamo svātanāya bhattaɱ saddhiɱ bhikkhu-saŋghenā" ti. Adhivāsesi Bhagavā tuṇhī-bhāvena.|| ||

Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo Bhagavato adivāsanaɱ viditvā uṭṭhāy āsanā Bhagavantaɱ abhivādetvā padakkhiṇaɱ katvā pakkāmi. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo tassā rattiyā accayena sake nivesane paṇītaɱ khādanīyaɱ bhojanīyaɱ paṭiyādāpetvā Bhagavato kālaɱ ārocāpesi: kālo bho Gotama, niṭṭhitaɱ bhatta'nti. [146] atha kho Bhagavā pubbaṇha-samayaɱ nivāsetvā pattacīvaraɱ ādāya yena Brahmāyussa brāhmaṇassa nivesanaɱ ten'upasaŋkami. Upasaŋkamitvā paññatte āsane nisīdi.|| ||

Saddhiɱ bhikkhu-saŋghena. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo sattāhaɱ Buddhapamukhaɱ bhikkhu-saŋghaɱ paṇītena khādanīyena bhojanīyena sahatthā santappesi sampavāresi. Atha kho Bhagavā tassa sattāhassa accayena videhesu cārikaɱ pakkāmi. Atha kho Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo acirapakkantassa Bhagavato kālamakāsi.|| ||

Atha kho sambahulā bhikkhū yena Bhagavā ten'upasaŋkamiɱsu. Upasaŋkamitvā Bhagavantaɱ abhivādetvā eka-m-antaɱ nisīdiɱsu. Eka-m-antaɱ nisinnā kho te bhikkhu Bhagavantaɱ etad avocuɱ: 'Brahmāyu bhante, brāhmaṇo kālakato, tassa kā gati, ko abhisamparāyo' ti.|| ||

Paṇḍito bhikkhave, Brahmāyu brāhmaṇo, paccapādi dhammassānudhammaɱ na ca maɱ1 dhammādhikaraṇaɱ vihesesi. Brahmāyu bhikkhave, brāhmaṇo pañcannaɱ orambhāgiyānaɱ saɱyojanānaɱ parikkhayā opapātiko hoti tattha parinibbāyī anāvattidhammo tasmā lokāti.|| ||

Idam avoca Bhagavā. Attamanā te bhikkhū Bhagavato bhāsitaɱ abhinandunti.|| ||
