[1][bodh] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī.

And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren!"

"Master!" responded those brethren.

The Exalted One said:

"Those recluses and brahmins, brethren,
whoever they be,
who do not understand what is decay-and-death,
who do not understand the uprising of decay-and-death,
who do not understand the ceasing of decay-and-death,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of decay-and-death;

that they will endure passing[1] beyond decay-and-death,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is birth,
who do not understand the uprising of birth,
who do not understand the ceasing of birth,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of birth;

that they will endure passing beyond birth,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is becoming,
who do not understand the uprising of becoming,
who do not understand the ceasing of becoming,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of becoming;

that they will endure passing beyond becoming,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is grasping,
who do not understand the uprising of grasping,
who do not understand the ceasing of grasping,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of grasping;

that they will endure passing beyond grasping,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is craving,
who do not understand the uprising of craving,
who do not understand the ceasing of craving,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of craving;

that they will endure passing beyond craving,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is feeling,
who do not understand the uprising of feeling,
who do not understand the ceasing of feeling,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of feeling;

that they will endure passing beyond feeling,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is contact,
who do not understand the uprising of contact,
who do not understand the ceasing of contact,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of contact;

that they will endure passing beyond contact,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is sense,
who do not understand the uprising of sense,
who do not understand the ceasing of sense,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of sense;

that they will endure passing beyond sense,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is name-and-shape,
who do not understand the uprising of name-and-shape,
who do not understand the ceasing of name-and-shape,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of name-and-shape;

that they will endure passing beyond name-and-shape,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what is consciousness,
who do not understand the uprising of consciousness,
who do not understand the ceasing of consciousness,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of consciousness;

that they will endure passing beyond consciousness,
this verily cannot be.

who do not understand what are activities,
who do not understand the uprising of activities,
who do not understand the ceasing of activities,
who do not understand the way going to the ceasing of activities;

that they will endure passing beyond activities,
this verily cannot be.

'But those recluses and brahmins, brethren,
whoever they be,
who do understand what is decay-and-death,
who do understand the uprising of decay-and-death,
who do understand the ceasing of decay-and-death,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of decay-and-death;[2]

that they will endure passing beyond decay-and-death, this verily can be.

who do understand what is birth,
who do understand the uprising of birth,
who do understand the ceasing of birth,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of birth;

that they will endure passing beyond birth, this verily can be.

who do understand what is becoming,
who do understand the uprising of becoming,
who do understand the ceasing of becoming,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of becoming;

that they will endure passing beyond becoming, this verily can be.

who do understand what is grasping,
who do understand the uprising of grasping,
who do understand the ceasing of grasping,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of grasping;

that they will endure passing beyond grasping, this verily can be.

who do understand what is craving,
who do understand the uprising of craving,
who do understand the ceasing of craving,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of craving;

that they will endure passing beyond craving, this verily can be.

who do understand what is feeling,
who do understand the uprising of feeling,
who do understand the ceasing of feeling,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of feeling;

that they will endure passing beyond feeling, this verily can be.

who do understand what is contact,
who do understand the uprising of contact,
who do understand the ceasing of contact,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of contact;

that they will endure passing beyond contact, this verily can be.

who do understand what is sense,
who do understand the uprising of sense,
who do understand the ceasing of sense,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of sense;

that they will endure passing beyond sense, this verily can be.

who do understand what is name-and-shape,
who do understand the uprising of name-and-shape,
who do understand the ceasing of name-and-shape,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of name-and-shape;

that they will endure passing beyond name-and-shape, this verily can be.

who do understand what is consciousness,
who do understand the uprising of consciousness,
who do understand the ceasing of consciousness,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of consciousness;

that they will endure passing beyond consciousness, this verily can be.

who do understand what are activities,
who do understand the uprising of activities,
who do understand the ceasing of activities,
who do understand the way going to the ceasing of activities;

that they will endure passing beyond activities, this verily can be."
