[242]

[1] Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, possessing four things
one is put into purgatory
according to his deserts.

What four?

Bodily action that is harmful,
action of speech that is harmful,
action of thought that is harmful,
view that is harmful.

Possessing these four things
one is put into purgatory
according to his deserts.

§

Monks, possessing four things
one is put into heaven
according to his deserts.

What four?

Bodily action that is harmless,
action of speech that is harmless,
action of thought that is harmless,
view that is harmless.

Possessing these four things
one is put into heaven
according to his deserts.
