[92]

[1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, there are these five achievements.[1]

What five?

The perfecting of faith,
the perfecting of virtue,
the perfecting of learning,
the perfecting of charity,
and the perfecting of insight.

Verily, monks, these are the five achievements.'

[1] Sampadā, Cf. D. iii, 235 and below V, § 130 for a different set. cf. above, Nos. 46, 65. We have no coincident word for sampadā. 'Perfection' is too high in meaning. 'Success' might be fairly adequate, but has for us no religious associations. Cf. the saying, Dial., 'Work out your own salvation.' This is very free, but indicates the long arduous procedure.
