Issāya Abhiññāya Suttaɱ 1

Full Understanding of Envy 1

[711.1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

''Monks, for the full understanding of envy
five things ought to be made to become.

What five?

The thought of the unattractive,
of death,
of perils,
of the cloying of food,
of there being no real joy in the whole world.

Verily, monks, for the full understanding of envy
these five things ought to be made to become.'

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

''Monks, for the quittance of envy
five things ought to be made to become.

What five?

The governance by faith,
the governance by energy,
the governance by mindfulness,
the governance by concentration
the governance by insight.

Verily, monks, for the quittance of envy
these five things ought to be made to become.'

Renunciation of Envy 1

[756.1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

''Monks, for the renunciation of envy
five things ought to be made to become.

What five?

The thought of the unattractive,
of death,
of perils,
of the cloying of food,
of there being no real joy in the whole world.

Verily, monks, for the renunciation of envy
these five things ought to be made to become.'
