Maana: Maana [late VedicandEpic Sk. maana, fr. man, orig. meaning perhaps "high opinions" (i. e. No. 2); hence "pride" (No. 1). Def. of root see partly under maaneti, partly under minaati] 1. pride, conceit, arrogance. Maana is one of the Sa~n~nojanas. It is one of the principal obstacles to Arahantship -- D III.234; S I.4. --asmi- pride of self, as real egoism D III.273. -- 2. honour, respect J V.331 (+puujaa). Usually in cpd. bahumaana great respect.
