[1] THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Saavatthii.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

'Monks!'

'Yes, lord,' replied those monks to the Exalted One.

Tbe Exalted One said:

'Monks, possessed of three qualities
one is put into Purgatory
according to his deserts.

What three?

Foul action of body,
foul action of speech,
foul action of mind.

Monks, possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory
according to his deserts.

Monks, possessed of three qualities
one is put into Heaven
according to his deserts.

What three?

Clean action of body,
clean action of speech,
clean action of mind.

Monks, possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Heaven
according to his deserts.
