[276]

[1] THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Saavatthii.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

'Monks!'

'Yes, lord,' replied those monks to the Exalted One.

Tbe Exalted One said:

'Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself calumnus,
he encourages another in calumny,
he approves of calumny.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from calumny,
he encourages another to abstain from calumny,
he approves of abstaining from calumny.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.
