XXIII: Sucarita Vagga
The Book of the Gradual Sayings
The Book of the Fours
Chapter XXIII: Good Conduct
Translated from the Pali by F. L. Woodward, M.A.
 Thus have I heard:
On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Saavatthii.
Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:
"Yes, lord," they replied,
and the Exalted One said:
"Monks, there are these four poets.
and the extempore poet.
These are the four.'
Possibly inserted to make up the ten suttas of each vagga. Cf. Dial. i, 22 n.; Buddhist India, 184; DA. i, 95; SA. i, 286; UdA. 205. They are as follows:
Cintaa-kavii, 'he who composes after thinking.'
Suta-kavii, 'who writes down what he has heard said - e.g., myths and legends.'
Attha-kavii, 'he who writes of the meaning of a thing.'
Pa.tibhaana-kavii, 'who writes of his own invention, like the elder Vangiisa.' Comy.
