[105]

[1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied; and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, pursuing five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
neither dear
nor loved
nor revered
nor what he ought to become.

What five?

Whisperers

He is intimate with those who are unfamiliar;[1]
interfering without warrant;[2]
frequents the society of[3] dissenters;
whispers[4] in the ear;
and asks too much.

[106] Monks. pursuing these five courses
a clan-going monk becomes among clan folk
neither dear
nor loved
nor revered
nor what he ought to become.
