[66]

[1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī,
at Jeta Grove, in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

Then the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren."

"Lord," responded those brethren to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One thus spake:

"I will teach you, Brethren,
the things that make for bondage
and the fetter.

Do ye listen to it.

And what, Brethren, are the things that make for bondage
and what is the fetter?

"There are, brethren,
objects cognizable by the eye,
objects desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them.

There are, brethren,
sounds cognizable by the ear,
sounds desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them.

There are, brethren,
scents cognizable by the nose,
scents desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them.

There are, brethren,
savours cognizable by the tongue,
savours desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them.

There are, brethren,
tangibles cognizable by the body,
tangibles desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them.

There are, brethren,
mind-states cognizable by the mind,
mind-states desirable,
pleasant,
delightful
and dear,
passion-fraught,
inciting to lust.

These, brethren, are called:
'the things that make for bondage.'

The desire and lust that are therein, -
that is the fetter that is in them."
