[1] THUS HAVE I HEARD

Once the Exalted One was dwelling near Sāvatthī.

Then the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks!"

"Yes, lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.

The Exalted One said:

"Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

What three?

One is himself a taker of life,
he encourages another to take life,
[276]he approves of taking life.

Possessed of these three qualities
one is put into Purgatory according to his deserts.

Monks, one possessed of three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts.

What three?

He himself abstains from taking life,
he encourages another to abstain from taking life,
he approves of abstaining from taking life.

Possessed of these three qualities
is put into heaven according to his deserts."
