Quittance of Arrogance 2

[1102.1] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One dwelt near Sāvatthī;
and there he addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

'Yes, lord,' they replied;
and the Exalted One said:

''Monks, for the quittance of arrogance
five things ought to be made to become.

What five?

The thought of impermanence,
of no-self,
of death,
of the cloying of food,
of there being no real joy in the whole world.

Verily, monks, for the quittance of arrogance
these five things ought to be made to become.'
