Not To Be Followed

[199.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
should not be associated with.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person should not be associated with.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should be associated with.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person should be associated with."

 


 

Not To Be Associated With

[199.2] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
should not be associated with.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person should not be associated with.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should be associated with.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person should be associated with."

 


 

Should Not Be Cultivated

[199.3] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
should not be cultivated.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person should not be cultivated.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should be cultivated.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person should be cultivated."

 


 

Should Not Be Venerated

[199.4] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
should not be venerated.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person should not be venerated.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should be venerated.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person should be venerated."

 


 

Is Not Praisworthy

[199.5] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
is not praiseworthy.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person is not praiseworthy.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should is praiseworthy.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person is praiseworthy."


 

Is Not Respected

[199.6] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
is not respected.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person is not respected.

Possessed of ten qualities a person is respected.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person is respected."


 

Is Not Shown Deference

[199.7] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
should not be shown deference[.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person should not be shown deference[.

Possessed of ten qualities a person should be shown deference.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,

Is Not Successful

[199.8] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
is not successful.

What ten qualities?

wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person is not successful.

Possessed of ten qualities a person is successful.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person is successful."

 


 

Is Not Purified

[199.9] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
is not purified.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person is not purified.

Possessed of ten qualities a person is purified.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person is purified."

 


 

Does Not Conquer Pride

[199.10] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
does not conquer pride.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person does not conquer pride.

Possessed of ten qualities a person conquers pride.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person conquers pride."

 


 

Does Not Grow in Insight

[199.11] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
does not grow in insight.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person does not grow in insight.

Possessed of ten qualities a person grows in insight.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person grows in insight."

 


 

Works Much Demerit

[199.12] "Monks, a person possessed of ten qualities
works much demerit.

What ten qualities?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

Possessed of these ten qualities
a person works much demerit.

Possessed of ten qualities a person works much merit.

What ten qualities?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Possessed of these ten a person works much merit."

 


[ed1] This sutta is counted as twelve suttas in Be and Ce which is followed by Bhk. Bodhi; the BJT (apparently a version of Ce expanded and edited to closely follow the PTS) has this as one sutta with 12 divisions; the PTS Pali (Ee) numbers this as one sutta to be expanded as here.
