On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.
Then he addressed the monks, saying:
"Monks."
"Yes, Lord," replied those monks to the Exalted One.
The Exalted One said this:
"Monks, owing to the presence of three things
					the believing clansman
					begets great merit.
What three?
Owing to the presence of faith,
					the believing clansman
					begets great merit.
Owing to the presence of gifts,
					the believing clansman
					begets great merit.
Owing to the presence of worthy recipients thereof,
					the believing clansman
					begets great merit.
Owing to the presence of these three things, monks,
					the believing clansman
					begets great merit."
