"Monks, taking life, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of taking life
is the shortening of a man's life.
■
Monks, stealing, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of stealing
is a man's loss of wealth.
■
Monks, fleshly lusts, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of fleshly lusts
is a man's rivalry and hatred.
■
Monks, lying, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of lying
is the slandering
and false-speaking of a man.
■
Monks, backbiting, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of backbiting
is the breaking up of a man's friendships.

Monks, harsh speech, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of harsh speech
is an unpleasing noise for a man.

Monks, frivolous talk, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of frivolous talk
is unacceptable speech for a man.

Monks, drinking strong drink, when pursued,
practised,
increased,
brings one to hell,
to an animal's womb,
to the Peta realm;
what is the very trifling result of drinking strong drink
is madness for a man'.
[1] Sabba-lahuso. P.E.D., I think wrongly, considers this an adverb 'very quickly.' Comy. glosses, parittaka (tena parittakena kammavipākena appāyuko hoti); there is a reading lahuko. Perhaps we should render 'immediate.'
