[149]

[1] Thus have I heard:

The Exalted One was once staying near Sāvatthī
at the Jeta Grove in Anāthapiṇḍika's Park.

And there the Exalted One addressed the brethren, saying:

"Brethren!"

"Master!" responded those brethren.

The Exalted One said:

"For that which is suffering, brethren,
there desire should be put away by you.

And what, brethren, is suffering?

Body, brethren, is suffering.

Ye should put away desire there.

Feeling is suffering.

Ye should put away desire there.

Perception is suffering.

Ye should put away desire there.

The activities is suffering.

Ye should put away desire there.

Consciousness is suffering.

Ye should put away desire there.

Whatsoever, brethren, is suffering,
there ye should put away desire."
