Dutiya Paṭipadā Suttaṃ

Ekaṃ samayaṃ Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṃ viharati.|| ||

Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

"Bhikkhavo" ti.|| ||

"Bhadante" ti te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṃ.|| ||

Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

"Tisso imā bhikkhave paṭipadā.|| ||

Katamā tisso?|| ||

Āgāḷhā paṭipadā,||
nijjhāmā paṭipadā,||
majjhimā paṭipadā.|| ||

2. Katamā ca bhikkhave āgāḷhā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco evaṃ-vādi hoti evaṃ-diṭṭhi:|| ||

'N'attha kāmesu doso' ti.|| ||

So kāmesu pātavyataṃ āpajjati.|| ||

Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave āgāḷhā paṭipadā.|| ||

3. Katamā ca bhikkhave nijjhāmā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco acelako hoti mutt'ācāro hatth-ā-palekhano||
na ehi-bhadantiko,||
na tiṭṭha-bhadantiko,||
na abhibhaṭaṃ,||
na uddissa-kaṭaṃ,||
na nimantaṇaṃ sādiyati.|| ||

So na kumhimukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na khaḷopi-mukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na eḷalakamantaraṃ,||
na daṇḍa-mantaraṃ,||
na musalamantaraṃ,||
na dvinnaṃ bhuñjamānānaṃ,||
na gabhiniyā,||
na pāyamānāya,||
na purisantaragatāya,||
na saṃkittīsu,||
na yattha sā upaṭṭhito hoti,||
na yattha makkhikā saṇḍacārinī,||
na macchaṃ,||
na maṃsaṃ,||
na suraṃ,||
na merayaṃ,||
na thusodakaṃ pivati.|| ||

So ekāgāriko vā hoti ekālopiko,||
dvāgāriko vā hoti dvālopiko,||
sattāgāriko vā hoti sattālopiko,||
ekissā pi dattiyā yāpeti,||
dvīhi pi dattīpi yāpeti,||
sattahi pi dattīhi yāpeti,||
ekāhikam pi āhāraṃ āhāreti,||
dvāhikam pi āhāraṃ āhāreti,||
sattāhikam pi āhāraṃ āhāreti.|| ||

daddula-bhakkho pi hoti,||
haṭa-bhakkho pi hoti,||
kaṇa-bhakkho pi hota,||
ācāma-bhakkho pi hoti,||
piññāka-bhakkho pi hoti,||
tiṇa-bhakkho pi hoti,||
gomaya-bhakkho pi hoti.|| ||

Vana-mūla-phalāhāro yāpeti pavatta-phalahoji.|| ||

So sāṇāni pi dhāreti,||
masāṇāni pi dhareti,||
chavadussāni pi dhāreti,||
paṃsukūlāni pi dhāreti,||
tīrīṭāni pi dhareti,||
ajināni pi dhāreti,||
ajinakkhipam pi dhāreti,||
kusa-cīram pi dhāreti,||
vāka-vīram pi dhāreti,||
phalaka-vīram pi dhāreti,||
kesakam-balam pi dhāreti,||

Kesamassulocako pi hoti||
kesa-massulocanānuyogam anuyutto.|| ||

Ubbhaṭṭhako pi hoti||
āsanapaṭikkitto.|| ||

Ukkuṭiko pi hoti||
ukkuṭikappadhānām anuyutto.|| ||

Kaṇṭakāpassayiko pi hoti||
kaṇṭakāpassaye seyyaṃ kappeti.|| ||

Sāyaṃ tatiyakam pi udakorohaṇānuyogam anuyutto viharati.|| ||

Iti eva-rūpaṃ aneka-vihitaṃ kāyassa ātāpana-paritāpanānuyogam anuyutto viharati.|| ||

Ayaṃ vuccati bhikkhave nijjhāmā paṭipadā.|| ||

Katamā ca bhikkhave majjhimā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhū anuppannānaṃ pāpakānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ anuppādāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati viriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Uppannānaṃ pākānaṃ akusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ pahāṇāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati viriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Anuppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ uppādāya chandaṃ janeti vāyamati viriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Uppannānaṃ kusalānaṃ dhammānaṃ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyo-bhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā [297] chandaṃ janeti vāyamati viriyaṃ ārabhati cittaṃ paggaṇhāti padahati|| ||

Chanda-samādhi-padhāna-saṇkhāra-samannāgataṃ iddipādaṃ bhāveti.|| ||

Viriya-samādhi-padhāna-saṇkhāra-samannāgataṃ iddhi-pāda bhāveti.|| ||

Citta-samādhi-padhāna-saṇkhāra-samannāgataṃ baddhipādaṃ bhāveti.|| ||

Vīmaṃsā-samādhi-padhāna-saṇkhāra-samannāgataṃ iddhi-pādaṃ bhāveti.|| ||

Saddh'indriyaṃ bhāveti,||
viriy'indriyaṃ bhāveti,||
sat'indriyaṃ bhāveti,||
samādhinduyaṃ bhāveti,||
paññ'indriyaṃ bhāveti.|| ||

Saddhā-balaṃ bhāveti,||
viriya-balaṃ bhāveti,||
sati-balaṃ bhāveti,||
samādhi-balaṃ bhāveti,||
paññā-balaṃ bhāveti|| ||

Sati-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
dhamma-vicaya-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
viriya-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
pīti-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
passaddhi-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
samādhi-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti,||
upekkā-sambojjh'aṇgaṃ bhāveti.|| ||

Sammā-diṭṭhiṇa bhāveti,||
sammā-saṇkappaṃ bhāveti,||
sammā-vācaṃ bhāvati,||
semmā-kammantaṃ bhāveti,||
sammā-ājīvaṃ bhāveti,||
sammā-vāyāmaṃ bhāveti,||
sammā-satiṃ bhāveti,||

Imā kho bhikkhave tisso paṭipadā" ti.|| ||

 


[ed1] The PTS text has "... pe ..." here and at the following section breaks. The BJT interprets this as meaning to insert "Imā ko bhikkhave tisso paṭipadā ti. Tisso imā bhikkhave paṭipadā. Katamā tisso?" which as it stands makes no sense. The CSCD has elipses only. Apparently the version of the Pali used by Bhikkhu Bodh breaks these up into separate suttas which would make what BJT has make better sense as at least an indication that the first two parts be repeated. Since all versions have at least the elipses that these were originally intended to be separate suttas is the likely correct organization. It is numbered here as one sutta, showing section breaks but without repeating the first part of each sutta for the sake of maintaining the PTS sutta numbering system intact.
