Dutiya Paṭipadā Suttaṁ

Ekaṁ samayaṁ Bhagavā Sāvatthiyaṁ viharati.|| ||

Tatra kho Bhagavā bhikkhū āmantesi:|| ||

"Bhikkhavo" ti.|| ||

"Bhadante" ti te bhikkhū Bhagavato paccassosuṁ.|| ||

Bhagavā etad avoca:|| ||

"Tisso imā bhikkhave paṭipadā.|| ||

Katamā tisso?|| ||

Āgāḷhā paṭipadā,||
nijjhāmā paṭipadā,||
majjhimā paṭipadā.|| ||

2. Katamā ca bhikkhave āgāḷhā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco evaṁ-vādi hoti evaṁ-diṭṭhi:|| ||

'N'attha kāmesu doso' ti.|| ||

So kāmesu pātavyataṁ āpajjati.|| ||

Ayaṁ vuccati bhikkhave āgāḷhā paṭipadā.|| ||

3. Katamā ca bhikkhave nijjhāmā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, ekacco acelako hoti mutt'ācāro hatth-ā-palekhano||
na ehi-bhadantiko,||
na tiṭṭha-bhadantiko,||
na abhibhaṭaṁ,||
na uddissa-kaṭaṁ,||
na nimantaṇaṁ sādiyati.|| ||

So na kumhimukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na khaḷopi-mukhā patigaṇhāti,||
na eḷalakamantaraṁ,||
na daṇḍa-mantaraṁ,||
na musalamantaraṁ,||
na dvinnaṁ bhuñjamānānaṁ,||
na gabhiniyā,||
na pāyamānāya,||
na purisantaragatāya,||
na saṅkittīsu,||
na yattha sā upaṭṭhito hoti,||
na yattha makkhikā saṇḍacārinī,||
na macchaṁ,||
na maṁsaṁ,||
na suraṁ,||
na merayaṁ,||
na thusodakaṁ pivati.|| ||

So ekāgāriko vā hoti ekālopiko,||
dvāgāriko vā hoti dvālopiko,||
sattāgāriko vā hoti sattālopiko,||
ekissā pi dattiyā yāpeti,||
dvīhi pi dattīpi yāpeti,||
sattahi pi dattīhi yāpeti,||
ekāhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāreti,||
dvāhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāreti,||
sattāhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāreti.|| ||

So ekāgāriko vā homi ekālopiko,||
dvāgāriko vā homi dvālopiko,||
sattāgāriko vā homi sattālopiko.|| ||

Ekissā pi dattiyā yāpemi,||
dvīhi pi dattīhi yāpemi,||
sattahi pi dattīhi yāpemi.|| ||

Ekāhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāremi,||
dvīhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāremi,||
sattāhikam pi āhāraṁ āhāremi.|| ||

So sāka-bhakkho pi hoti,||
sāmāka-bhakkho pi hoti,||
nīvāra-bhakkho pi hoti,||
daddula-bhakkho pi hoti,||
haṭa-bhakkho pi hoti,||
kaṇa-bhakkho pi hota,||
ācāma-bhakkho pi hoti,||
piññāka-bhakkho pi hoti,||
tiṇa-bhakkho pi hoti,||
gomaya-bhakkho pi hoti.|| ||

Vana-mūla-phalāhāro yāpeti pavatta-phalahoji.|| ||

So sāṇāni pi dhāreti,||
masāṇāni pi dhareti,||
chavadussāni pi dhāreti,||
paṁsukūlāni pi dhāreti,||
tīrīṭāni pi dhareti,||
ajināni pi dhāreti,||
ajinakkhipam pi dhāreti,||
kusa-cīram pi dhāreti,||
vāka-vīram pi dhāreti,||
phalaka-vīram pi dhāreti,||
kesakam-balam pi dhāreti,||
vālakam-balam pi dhāreti,||
ulūkapakkham pi dhāreti.|| ||

Kesamassulocako pi hoti||
kesa-massulocanānuyogam anuyutto.|| ||

Ubbhaṭṭhako pi hoti||
āsanapaṭikkitto.|| ||

Ukkuṭiko pi hoti||
ukkuṭikappadhānām anuyutto.|| ||

Kaṇṭakāpassayiko pi hoti||
kaṇṭakāpassaye seyyaṁ kappeti.|| ||

Sāyaṁ tatiyakam pi udakorohaṇānuyogam anuyutto viharati.|| ||

Iti eva-rūpaṁ aneka-vihitaṁ kāyassa ātāpana-paritāpanānuyogam anuyutto viharati.|| ||

Ayaṁ vuccati bhikkhave nijjhāmā paṭipadā.|| ||

Katamā ca bhikkhave majjhimā paṭipadā?|| ||

Idha, bhikkhave, bhikkhū anuppannānaṁ pāpakānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ anuppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati viriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Uppannānaṁ pākānaṁ akusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ pahāṇāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati viriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Anuppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ uppādāya chandaṁ janeti vāyamati viriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati.|| ||

Uppannānaṁ kusalānaṁ dhammānaṁ ṭhitiyā asammosāya bhiyyo-bhāvāya vepullāya bhāvanāya pāripūriyā [297] chandaṁ janeti vāyamati viriyaṁ ārabhati cittaṁ paggaṇhāti padahati|| ||

Chanda-samādhi-padhāna-saṅkhāra-samannāgataṁ iddipādaṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Viriya-samādhi-padhāna-saṅkhāra-samannāgataṁ iddhi-pāda bhāveti.|| ||

Citta-samādhi-padhāna-saṅkhāra-samannāgataṁ baddhipādaṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Vīmaṁsā-samādhi-padhāna-saṅkhāra-samannāgataṁ iddhi-pādaṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Saddh'indriyaṁ bhāveti,||
viriy'indriyaṁ bhāveti,||
sat'indriyaṁ bhāveti,||
samādhinduyaṁ bhāveti,||
paññ'indriyaṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Saddhā-balaṁ bhāveti,||
viriya-balaṁ bhāveti,||
sati-balaṁ bhāveti,||
samādhi-balaṁ bhāveti,||
paññā-balaṁ bhāveti|| ||

Sati-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
dhamma-vicaya-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
viriya-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
pīti-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
passaddhi-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
samādhi-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti,||
upekkā-sambojjh'aṅgaṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Sammā-diṭṭhiṇa bhāveti,||
sammā-saṅkappaṁ bhāveti,||
sammā-vācaṁ bhāvati,||
semmā-kammantaṁ bhāveti,||
sammā-ājīvaṁ bhāveti,||
sammā-vāyāmaṁ bhāveti,||
sammā-satiṁ bhāveti,||
sammā-samādhiṁ bhāveti.|| ||

Ayaṁ vuccati bhikkave majjhimā paṭipadā.|| ||

Imā kho bhikkhave tisso paṭipadā" ti.|| ||

 


[ed1] The PTS text has "... pe ..." here and at the following section breaks. The BJT interprets this as meaning to insert "Imā ko bhikkhave tisso paṭipadā ti. Tisso imā bhikkhave paṭipadā. Katamā tisso?" which as it stands makes no sense. The CSCD has elipses only. Apparently the version of the Pali used by Bhikkhu Bodh breaks these up into separate suttas which would make what BJT has make better sense as at least an indication that the first two parts be repeated. Since all versions have at least the elipses that these were originally intended to be separate suttas is the likely correct organization. It is numbered here as one sutta, showing section breaks but without repeating the first part of each sutta for the sake of maintaining the PTS sutta numbering system intact.
