[1] Thus have I heard:

On a certain occasion the Exalted One was staying near Sāvatthī.

Now the venerable Anuruddha came to see the Exalted One.

On coming to him
he saluted and sat down at one side.

As [260] he thus sat
the venerable Anuruddha said this to the Exalted One:

"Here in this world, lord,
with the deva-sight,
purified and surpassing that of men,
I am wont to see womenfolk,^[1]
when body breaks up after death,
being reborn in the Waste,
the Way of Woe,
in the Downfall,
in Purgatory.

Pray, lord, possessed of what qualities
are womenfolk, when body breaks up after death,
reborn in the Waste,
the Way of Woe,
in the Downfall,
in Purgatory?"

'Possessed of three qualities, Anuruddha,
womenfolk, when body breaks up after death,
reborn in the Waste,
the Way of Woe,
in the Downfall,
in Purgatory.^[2]

What three?

Herein, Anuruddha, in the morning
a woman stays at home
with heart haunted by the taint of stinginess.

■

At noontide
a woman stays at home
with heart haunted by jealousy.

■

At eventide
she stays at home
with heart haunted by sensuality and lust.

These are the three qualities, Anuruddha,
possessed of which
womenfolk, when body breaks up after death,
are reborn in the Waste,
the Way of Woe,
in the Downfall,
in Purgatory."
