Sutta 189

Ariya-Magga Suttaɱ

Ariyan and Unariyan

[189.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you the Ariyan,
also the unariyan.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the unariyan?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'the unariyan.'

And what is the Ariyan?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'the Ariyan.'"

 


 

Sutta 190

Sukka-magga Suttaɱ

Bright Way and Dark Way

[190.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you the bright way,
also the dark way.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the dark way

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'the dark way.'

And what is the bright way?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'the bright way.'"

 


 

Suttas 191

Saddhamma Suttaɱ

True Dhamma and False Dhamma

[191.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you true Dhamma,
also false dhamma.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is false dhamma?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'false dhamma.'

And what is true Dhamma?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'true Dhamma.'"

Sappurisadhamma Suttaɱ

Very-man Dhamma and Its Opposite

[192.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you the dhamma of the very-man,
also what is not the dhamma of the very-man.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is not the dhamma of the very-man?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'what is not the dhamma of the very-man.'

And what is the dhamma of the very-man?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'the dhamma of the very-man.'"

Uppādetabba Suttaɱ

To Be Brought About

[193.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you Dhamma to be brought about ,
also dhamma not to be brought about.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is dhamma not to be brought about?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'dhamma not to be brought about.'

And what is Dhamma to be brought about?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'Dhamma to be brought about.'"

Āsevitabba Suttaɱ

To Be Followed

[194.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you Dhamma to be followed,
also dhamma not to be followed.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is dhamma not to be followed?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'dhamma not to be followed.'

And what is the Dhamma to be followed?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'Dhamma to be followed.'"

Bhāvetabba Suttaɱ

To Be Made to Grow

[195.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you Dhamma to be made to grow,
also dhamma not to be made to grow.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the dhamma not to be made to grow?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'the dhamma not to be made to grow.'

And what is Dhamma to be made to grow?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

Bahulīkāttabba Suttaɱ

To Be Made Much Of

[196.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you Dhamma to be made much of,
also dhamma not to be made much of.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the dhamma not to be made much of?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'dhamma not to be made much of.'

And what is the Dhamma to be made much of?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'the Dhamma to be made much of.'"

Anussaritabba Suttaɱ

To Be Remembered

[197.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you the Dhamma to be remembered,
also the dhamma not to be remembered.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the dhamma not to be remembered?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'the dhamma not to be remembered.'

And what is the Dhamma to be remembered?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called 'Dhamma to be remembered.'"

Sacchikātabba Suttaɱ

To Be Realized

[198.1] THUS have I heard:

Once the Exalted One addressed the monks, saying:

"Monks."

"Yes, lord," they replied, and the Exalted One said:

"Monks, I will teach you the dhamma to be realized,
also the dhamma not to be realized.

Do ye listen to it.

Attend carefully and I will speak."

"We will, sir," replied those monks to the Exalted One,
who then said:

"And what, monks, is the dhamma not to be realized?

Taking life,
taking what is not given,
wrong conduct in sexual desires,
falsehood,
slander,
bitter speech,
idle babble,
coveting,
harmfulness
wrong view.

This, monks, is called 'the dhamma not to be realized.'

And what is the dhamma to be realized?

Abstaining from taking life,
abstaining from taking what is not given,
abstaining from wrong conduct in sexual desires,
abstaining from falsehood,
abstaining from slander,
abstaining from bitter speech,
abstaining from idle babble,
non-coveting,
harmlessness,
right view.

This, monks, is called "the dhamma to be realized.'"
