[168]

[1][than] Thus have I heard:

Once the Exalted One said to the brethren:

"Increasing in five growths, brethren,
the Ariyan woman disciple
increases in the Axiyan growth,
takes hold of the essential,
takes hold of the better.[1]

What five?

[169] She grows in faith,[2]
grows in virtue,
in learning,
in generosity,
in wisdom.

Making such growth, brethren,
she takes hold of the essential,
she takes hold of the better."

Who in this world in faith and virtue grows,
In wisdom, generosity and lore -
A virtuous disciple, in this world
She wins what is essential for herself.[3]

[1] Sārādāyinī ca varādāyinī ca.

[2] As at S. i, 21, 'faith' means that she believes in karma, and its fruit.

[3] Sāraɱ attano.
