[1][than][olds][bodh] Now the venerable Sāriputta came and visited the Exalted One,
saluted him and sat down at one side.
So seated, the Exalted One said to him:
'How many attributes,[1] Sāriputta,
has a canker-freed monk,
possed of which
the monk relizes that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers"?'

2. 'Lord, there are these eight attributes.
What eight?
3. 'Herein, lord, to a canker-freed monk
all compounded things
by right wisdom
appear wholly impermanent,
as they really are.
When, indeed, they so appear,
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk,
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers."

4. Then, to a canker-freed monk,
lusts
by right wisdom
appear wholly like fire-pits,[2]
as they really are.
When, indeed, they so appear,
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk,
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers."

5. Again, the heart of a canker-freed monk
inclines[3] towards seclusion,
leans thereunto,
bends thereunto,
abides therein,
finds delight therein
and is rid of all conditions
pertaining to the cankers.
When, indeed, the heart of a canker-freed monk
inclines towards seclusion,
leans thereunto,
bends thereunto,
abides therein,
finds delight therein
and is rid of all conditions
pertaining to the cankers
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk,
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers."

6. Moreover, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the four arisings of mindfulness
are made become
and fully so.
When, indeed, the four arisings of mindfulness
are made become
and fully so,
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk,
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers."

7. Moreover, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the four bases of psychic power
are made become
and fully so.
When, indeed, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the four bases of psychic power
are made become
and fully so
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers"

8. Moreover, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the five faculties
are made become
and fully so.
When, indeed, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the five faculties
are made become
and fully so
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers"

9. Moreover, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the seven parts in awakening
are made become
and fully so.
When, indeed, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the seven parts in awakening
are made become
and fully so
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk
by which he realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers"

10. Moreover, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the eightfold Ariyan Way
is made become
and fully so.
When, indeed, lord, by a canker-freed monk
the eightfold Ariyan Way
is made become
and fully so
it is, lord, an attribute of the canker-freed monk
by which he [152] realizes
that the cankers are destroyed
and acknowledges:
"Destroyed by me are the cankers"
